If Pawlowski Is Acquitted

If Pawlowski is acquitted,  Allentown will be the outlander for the next four years.  While the prosecutor could fail to convince a jury, beyond a reasonable doubt, that his exploitation of the city bid system rose to a level necessary for conviction,  everybody now knows that city hall was essentially corrupt.  Regardless of the trial outcome, neither he or Allentown would be considered innocent.

Although Pawlowski would be personally insufferable,  his effectiveness as a leader would be completely neutralized. Nobody on City Council, or other local governments, would want to be seen as his ally.  He would spend the next four years preaching to his small congregation of deniers about his innocence.  Those invested here could only hope that the current caretakers in place are left to run the city with little interference by him.  The mayoral campaigning for 2021 would begin in earnest immediately.

  1. If Pawlowski is acquitted city hall will remain dysfunctional, businesses will think twice about moving to town, and the city will continue to experience increased growth in poverty as it has for the last decade.

and all hope will be lost

  2. This is the last chance to dump this egotistical, maniac, individual. As a part-time attendee at the trial, and all the reports I have read, I can't believe this moron has not plead guilty. I guess he believes that his bullish, mobbed-up attorney, reliance on the McDonnell case and his lying self-denials will get him through.

My first observation, [from a campaign supporter in 2005 and saw the lying treachery in his eyes], is how can everybody be lying except him. Even his directors, [who plead guilty in some form or manor], testified how he, Palowski, wanted certain vendors to get the contracts they had to reconstruct the bids. No rebutal for that in which McMahon attacked their creditability and classifying them as liars.

I don't think he get off all the charges, however, the prosecution is presenting one hell of a case.

  3. notguilty@3:24, at this point in time pawlowski supporters are limited to those betting to secure something from him, and a few antagonistic types, which I read you to be. the current development in allentown is a result of pat browne's initiative. although it happen on pawlowski's watch, he was only a bystander. however, he did hope to ride it out of town, either to harrisburg or washington.

i do not debate in the comment section, nor do I host trolls.

  4. Mike,

What we are witnessing here and on other Allentown sites regarding Ed Pawlowski's tenure as mayor is very enlightening. It demonstrates for all to see the very foolish, gullible and evil nature of mankind.

It is unfortunate this mixture of ignorance and evil is and has been in full bloom in our town.

  5. I'm up late and not feeling well, damn flu or something, so I'm reading your blog at 1:30am lol

So what happens if Mayor Pawlowski is acquitted? Well, for one thing I'd bet real money on his re-election in 2021 for one.. The Allentown Republicans thought they had a winner in Nat Hyman and Pawlowski mopped the floor with him, it wasn't even close. If Pawlowski manages to get acquitted, that will give him a head of steam in 2021, and given the voting population of Allentown demand government be there for them, I expect another re-election celebration afterwards..

  6. Jamie,

If you lived in Allentown you could perhaps write with some authority on "the Allentown Republicans". You don't and it shows. Sorry to be so blunt, but the few of us left don't take kindly to uninformed criticism from cosy suburbs.

  7. It'd certainly be disappointing to see Chicago Eddy acquitted, but, for the remainder of his term, Allentown would probably be the most corruption-free city in American. Who would engage in any illegal activity with a guy who is probably under ongoing surveillance? The feds hate to lose, Lew Lappin is a top notch guy, so even post acquittal (G-d forbid), I can't imagine the Justice Dept wouldn't want to find something that would allow them their pound of flesh and continue to watch every move Eddy makes. And good for them.

So I think the real nightmare scenario isn't acquittal in and of itself, but rather the specter of re-election that would engender. Allentown having become a warehouse for the dependent class, and Chicago Eddy's vast popularity with those on the dole makes that all too possible. Chicago Eddy's re-election would certainly make Allentown attractive only to businesses such as pawn shops and tattoo parlors.

    I mean imagine it.
CEO: We're considering putting a new facility in Allentown PA.
Board: The place with the crooked Mayor? The place Bill Joel wrote about? The welfare capital of PA? Really? You like smothering property taxes and decaying infrastructure?

In that eventuality, there'd be a drain at 7th and Hamilton, and the City would be swirling down it...

  8. Mr Armstrong.

To be equally blunt, running a turncoat democratic candidate, whose appeal was largely to the country-club crowd and those who hate Pawlowski wasn't a good choice. He screwed over to legitimate Republican candidates in the Primary and I suppose could not understand that you can't campaign from your living room or the ballroom of places the vast majority of Allentonians couldn't afford, and also would likely be unwelcome to enter.

Mayor Pawlowski knocked on doors, attended every barber shop opening and hustled his way though his constituents, which is how he garnered the support to win. We didn't choose to move to the West End as we found the schools here in Upper Perk far superior to both my husband and my high school.

The Allentown Republicans need to look in the mirror on why you screwed up as bad as you did Sir, as the Mayor's office was yours for the taking. Now it's a shattered dream and not likely to be seriously contested again, given the Democratic lock on every elected office in the City.

    Enjoy your day.

  9. Also Mr Armstrong.

I recall seeing you mentioning on this blog some months ago that Hyman wasn't your choice as nominee. Apparently also, from what I gather, the GOP back room boys didn't believe that the primary candidates couldn't beat Pawlowski either. But you pinched your nose and ran Hyman because he had the money? Well if that was the case, what did he spend it on? He ran about the lowest-key campaign I could imagine. Just like the Democrats in Washington right now who have nothing else but "Hate Trump", isn't that really what Hyman ran on "Hate Pawlowski" as his major campaign theme?

Sir, people want to vote FOR a candidate, not against a candidate. If that's all te Republicans had to offer the voters of Allentown, it probably was a good thing Hyman lost. Allentown needs positive candidates who want to build a bright future in the city, Hyman's conflicts of interests would paralyze him irregardless, so now he's back converting old decrepit warehouses into apartments for Pawlowski voters. And the GOP is up shits creek without a paddle with no real future in the city as far as can be foreseen.

  10. While it seems unlikely that someone with 54 counts could walk ....

If Pawlowski would walk - consider the character of a individual that would conduct himself in such a manner - that lead to the charges. How can anyone defend this behavior, even if not guilty?

  11. Jamie,

As you aren't from Allentown or part of the local committee I have no need to discuss or defend what the few of us left here do on a public forum. Your judgmental posts continue to display mere second hand knowledge. You came off as self righteous. Walk a mile in the shoes of the few vocal Allentown Republicans then report back. We have all been vilified beyond belief.I generally enjoy reading your posts, but when they are uniformed they do a disservice to the cause of better government in the city and to the readers of the blog.

If you would care to discuss the Allentown situation I would be happy to do it privately.
